Tarigami urges PM to release Kashmiri detainees

Srinagar, Oct 22 (UNI) CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami today urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to fulfill his commitment of reviewing the cases of detenues in Jammu and Kashmir followed by release of all those not involved in heinous crimes.

''Given the number of people implicated falsely besides those who completed their jail term and whose detention stands quashed by the High Court, releasing 11 or 12 detainees was quite insignificant,'' Mr Tarigami said in a statement here.

He said the government should immediately review the cases of detenues and order the release of those not involved in heinous crimes on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr as a goodwill gesture.

It will be in the interest of the peace process to release the innocent detainees from jails and as a confidence building measure (CBM) for the people of the state, the CPI(M) leader added.

Mr Tarigami also condemned the alleged custodial killing of a youth in Pakharpora, Badgam and demanded stern action against the errant security personnel.
