Srinagar, Oct 22 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir Police have launched an inquiry into the death of a civilian in the Army custody in central Kashmir district of Badgam yesterday, an official spokesman said today.

He said the Army has also assured severe punishment to whosoever found guilty in the incident.

Giving details, the spokesman said troops arrested a civilian, Maqbool Ahmad Dar of Mohandpora village in Badgam district, on October 20 during a search operation.

Dar was lodged at the Kanidajan Army camp for questioning, he said, adding he developed some health problem yesterday afternoon and was rushed to an Army camp at Qasba Nagam for medical aid.

However, the spokesman said Dar died there before any medical aid could be given to him.

Later, locals at Mohandpora alleged that the Army killed Dar during interrogation.

The spokesman said police took cognisance of the matter and launched an inquiry into the incident.
