Sydney, Oct 22 (UNI) Dog biting a man may not be news for some but Australian opener Matthew Hayden is in the headlines these days after a canine attack left the cricketer with a gashed ankle a month ahead of the Ashes rivalry with England.

Hayden was jogging during a visit to his parents property at Kingaroy on Friday when he was attcked by a dog and a neighbour came to his help and took him to the hospital with the injury.

According to Sunday Mail, Hayden didn't have any tendon or ligament damage but the player himself feels that five centimetres long wound would remain open for several days ''to minimise the risk of infection before being stitched''.

''It was a vicious attack. I was was out for a leisurely run. You are always a bit shocked by that sort of thing but I was more disappointed than anything,'' Hayden was quoted as saying.

''It just hasn't been my week,'' he observed.

While Australia continue to battle in the ICC Champions Trophy, Hayden is out of action with a broken finger and the cricketer was quite upset.

''The hand injury would have kept me out for longer than this one anyway,'' said Hayden, even though he asserted that he would be fit before the first Test against England at the Gabba on November 23.
