Centre to constitute panel to check misuse of NE funds

Agartala, Oct 22 (UNI) Alarmed by the huge misuse and leakage of development funds in the North East, the Centre has decided to constitute a panel consisting of various ministries to look into the matter.

Official sources said here today the decision was taken by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who had reviewed the development aspects of the North East last week.

Home Minister Shivraj Patil, Union Minister for Development of North East Region(DoNER) and Tribal Affairs P R Kyndiah, along with officials of several Union Ministries, attended the high-level meeting.

Sources further said the Prime Minister was not satisfied with the measures taken by the DoNER Ministry to plug the leakages.

Hence, the new mechanism has been mooted.
