Gymnastics-Chen crowned lord of the rings

AARHUS, Denmark, Oct 21 (Reuters) Chen Yibing flexed his bulging muscles to claim the rings title and hand China a record sixth gold medal at the world gymnastics championships.

Chen's exhibition of strength and stamina in the strongman's event drew a score of 16.525 and confirmed these championships as the most successful ever for the Chinese team.

He eclipsed Bulgaria's Jordan Jovtchev, twice a former world champion, by .200 of a point. Dutchman Yuri van Gelder was aiming to defend his title but had to be satisfied with bronze.

Chen's team mate, all-round champion Yang Wei, missed out on a podium place after stumbling on his dismount yesterday.

But Chen was quick to credit his success to his more senior team mate.

''Yang Wei is a very good role model,'' said the 21-year-old.

''I've learned so much from him. My performance has been very stable from the beginning. I will try to do my best every time from now on.'' Jovtchev, however, was extremely critical of his display.

''I am not very happy with myself,'' said the 33-year-old, who missed out on a medal from the floor final.

''Everything hurts. I have won so many medals but not the gold at these championships.'' With China represented in three of the five apparatus finals on Saturday, the country could increase their haul on the final day of the championships.
