Cong allege harassment over lodging case on Jaya

Lucknow, Oct 21: Senior Congress leader and lawyer Amir Haider today alleged harassment by the Uttar Pradesh government for lodging a case with the Election Commission (EC) against Rajya Sabha member Jaya Bachchan for not disclosing assets in the affidavit filed during the polls.

Talking to mediapersons here, Mr Haider alleged the government was targeting his family and forcing them to withdraw the case even as the EC had starting probing the charges.

''The state officials have arbitrarily suspended functioning of our petrol pump although they found nothing improper during a checking on October 17,'' he said claiming they were receiving threatening telephone calls daily for withdrawing the case against Ms Bachchan.

Senior Congress leaders Siraj Mehandi, Naseeb Pathan and Wasim Ahmed were among others present in the press meet.

They have also sent a memorandum to Governor T V Rajeswar urging his intervention in the matter.

In his petition to EC, Amir Haider had charged that Ms Bachchan had not diclosed the properties of Barabanki in the name of her husband Amitabh in the Rajya Sabha election affidavit.

Mr Haider further informed that he would send all the evidence to EC soon as demanded by the Commission.
