Veteran actress Srividya cremated today

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 20: Noted South Indian actress Srividya, who died here last evening, was cremated today with full state honours.

The body of the actress was kept at the VJT hall here from the morning for her fans and the public to pay their last respects. It was later taken to the Brahmin Samajam crematorium at Karamana in the city, where her brother Shankararaman lit the pyre.

Chief Minister V S Achutanandan, Opposition Leader Oommen Chandy, Cultural Affairs Minister M A Baby and several other Ministers along with actors Mammoty, Murali, Madhu, K B Ganesh Kumar and others from the filmdom paid their homage.

Srividya, 53, died at a private hospital here following internal bleeding and cardiac arrest. She had been undergoing treatment for cancer for several years.

The yesteryear heart throb stole hearts of film buffs in Malayalam and other South Indian languages for the last four decades through memorable portrayal of a variety of roles. Daughter of Carnatic singer M L Vasanthakumari, she started her film career at the age of 13 in a Tamil movie 'Thiruvarutselvar'. She stirred the South Indian film industry with her charming looks and acting prowess and had acted in over 900 films in various languages, including Hindi.

She made it big in Malayalam films and won thrice the state government's best actress award.

The actress was also a good singer and had conducted several Carnatic music concerts. She had also acted in a few TV serials.
