Sangma favours Uranium Mining in Meghalaya

Shillong, Oct 20 (UNI) Former Lok Sabha Speaker P A Sangma said he favours Uranium mining in Meghalaya's West Khasi Hills district for the country's interest.

''Uranium is a precious mineral from the national security point of view. So let us contribute to the country,'' Mr Sangma said addressing a seminar on 'Look East Policy- Impact on the North East India' here today.

He also pointed out that the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) had assured to recruit and provide training to about 1000 local youths after the mining begins.

''It will generate employment and will be good for the state,'' he said.

''Centre is the owner of the minerals and therefore we cannot object to uranium mining in the state,'' Mr Sangma said.
