Mulayam espouses women empowerment cause
Lucknow, Oct 20 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav today asserted that the progress of women was imperative for any society, as it contributed towards an ideal and all-round development of its people.
''Women are being exploited all over the world. To check this tendency, the educational institutions/voluntary organisations will have to come forward,'' Mr Yadav pointed out.
He was addressing a function organised at the Isabella Thoburn College (popularly known as IT College) here to mark 150th anniversary of Methodist Society in India and completion of 25 yrs of autonomy of the Methodist Church.
Mr Yadav informed that deemed university status for IT College would be considered after the local body elections. ''Christian community has contributed significantly in serving the society.'' Regarding minorities, he said they should be given special opportunities.
''It is a matter of great pride that Asia's first women's college was set up here by the Methodist Society,'' he observed.
Assuring IT College of all possible cooperation, the CM said more efforts were required in the field of girls education. ''Ms Isabella Thoburn had resolved to educate women despite her limited resources.
Her efforts are now bearing fruits,'' he pointed out.
