Marine killed in Afghanistan named

LONDON, Oct 20 (Reuters) A Royal Marine who died following a suicide attack on a military convoy in Afghanistan was named by the Ministry of Defence today as Gary Wright of 45 Commando Royal Marines.

The MoD said Wright, 22, died yesterday when a suicide bomber blew himself up next to a vehicle in which Wright was patrolling in Lashkar Gah, the capital of the southern province of Helmand.

''He was an excellent marine who died doing the job he loved and will be missed by all his friends in 45 Commando,'' said his commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Duncan Dewar.

Wright, from Glasgow, joined the Royal Marines in October 2002.

The suicide bomber also killed several civilians, including two children.
