Magnitude 6.5 quake hits off Peru coast-USGS

WASHINGTON, Oct 20 (Reuters) A 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit near the coast of central Peru on Friday, the U S Geological Survey said.

The strong quake struck at 5:49 am (16:19 IST) about 155 km south-southeast of Lima, the USGS said.

There was no immediate threat of a tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported on its Web site.
