JeM militant held in Delhi; terror strike averted

New Delhi, Oct 20: Delhi police today claimed to have averted another major terror strike in the capital during the festival season with the arrest of a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militant and recovery of explosives, including 3 kg RDX and Rs 10 lakh.

Pervez Ahmed Radoo alias Raju (29), a resident of Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district, was arrested on October 14 with the explosives and the hawala money from Azadpur Fruit Market, Deputy Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar told a news conference.

Besides the RDX, timers detonators, police recovered a code matrix used by Pervez to communicate with other JeM operatives.

On October 16, two operatives of the Lashkar-e-Toiba were arrested with a consignment of explosives to be used in a pre- Diwali terror strike.

Pervez, a Zoology post graduate based in Pune, had been an active Jaish member since 2002. Srinagar JeM Chief Sherjil had been given the money and explosives to launch attackts in the capital in the run up to Diwali, Mr Kumar said.

''He had come to deliver the consignment to an associate who did not turn up....He is a carrier of arms, ammunition, explosives and money meant for JeM from different parts of India to J and K and Delhi. Police had received the inputs about terror attacks in the last week of September,'' he added.

During interrogation, Pervez revealed that he was returning to contact Sherjil in the Kashmir valley.

''He had collected the recovered money from Pune. He also used to receive hawala money which had been pumped in from Dubai,'' Mr Kumar added.

About Pervez involvement in the July Mumbai blasts, he said so far their was no evidence to establish any link.

Pervez had also confessed to have helped former JeM Srinagar Chief Ghulam Rasool, who was killed in a encounter in Kashmir in April 2006, to establish a terror module in Pune.

Ghulam Rasool had visited Pune with Pervez and collected hawala money. Ghulam Rasool had motivated Pervez to join Jasih.

Mr Kumar said Delhi police had also shared the inputs received by him with Kashmir Police.
