30 tsunami-hit children get Uttaranchal's "Him Jyoti" scholarship
Port Blair, Oct 20 (UNI) The Uttaranchal Government has provided Rs 1,80,000 for grant of "Him Jyoti" scholarships to 30 tsunami- affected children of Andaman and Nicobar Nancowrie group of islands.
The demand drafts for the amount was handed over by the Governor of Uttaranchal Sudarsh Agarwal to acting Chief Secretary of Andaman and Nicobar Administration Arvind Ray here today, an official release said.Last year for 2005-2006 similar amount was received from the Uttaranchal Government and was distributed to the 29 tsunami-affected children of Nancowrie.
According to the release, the present amount is being forwarded to the Assistant Education Officer, Nancowrie, for distribution of Rs 500 each to 30 children on monthly basis during 2006-2007.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands were flattened by cruel waves of tsunami on December 26, 2004, and the Nancowrie groups of islands were the worst-hit.
More than 3800 people had perished on the tsunami day.
