'Tortured for bringing insufficient dowry', a girl commits suicide

Hoshiarpur, Oct 19 (UNI) In a dowry death case, newly married girl allegedly committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance at Purana Bhangala village in this district, police sources said.

The sources said Kailasho Devi stated in her complaint to the police that her daughter Sarabjit Kaur was married with Balwinder Kumar on April 6, 2006. She had provided sufficient dowry at her marriage, but even then her son-in-law and his mother started allegedly torturing and mistreating her daughter for more dowry.

Her daughter consumed some poisonous substance under frustration and was admitted in Civil Hospital, Dasuya. She breathed her last in the hospital yesterday evening.

Mukerian Police has registered a case under sections 304 B, 506 and 34 of the IPC against the husband and mother. No arrest has been made so far.
