SC tells Centre to file reply regarding Mahadevi river
New Delhi, Oct 19 (UNI) The Supreme Court today directed the union government to file its reply within two weeks to the suit filed by the state of Goa government, seeking stay of the project by Karnataka government disrupting the flow of water from Mahadevi river flowing through Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal, Justices C K Thakker and R V Raveendran issued the direction when told that the Centre has not filed its response to the suit.
Goa, in its suit, has contended that Mahadevi is the only river flowing through the state and major segment of Goa'a population is depended on this river while several rivers are flowing through Karnataka and the project contemplated by Karnataka, if not stayed, shall curtail the flow of water to Goa.
Such disruption in the supply of water from river Mahadevi may threaten the very survival of natives of Goa, the plaintiff state further contended.
