Imrana's father-in-law guilty of rape; gets 10 yr RI

Muzzafarnagar, Oct 19 (UNI) Close on the heels of the Delhi High Court finding Santosh Singh guilty of raping and murdering Priyadarshani Mattoo, a local court today sentenced 55-year-old Ali Mohammed to 10 years' rigourous imprisonment for raping his daughter-in-law Imrana in 2005.

The Imrana case had hogged the limelight after the a fatwa (decree) was issued declaring her as 'haraam' (unlawful) for her husband after the rape came to light.

District and Sessions judge R D Nimesh pronounced the judgement in a crowded courtroom where Ali Mohammed was brought under heavy police protection. The victim was herself not present when the sentence was pronounced.

Besides sentencing the accused to 10 years' RI, the judge also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him. If he fails to pay the penalty, his jail term would be extended by another six months.
