Current Kharif season in Vidarbha worse than last year: VJAS

Nagpur, Oct 19 (UNI) The current Kharif season has been worse than last year for farmers in the agrarian crisis-ridden Vidarbha region, according to Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS).

The VJAS, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) working for the cause of farmers, has claimed that 460 farmers have committed suicide in Vidarbha during the Kharif 2006 season -- from June 1 to October 20, 2006. The figure during the same period last year was 77, a VJAS press release here today said.

The number of suicides till October 20 was 57, the press release said. September 2006 has turned out to be worst for farmers in the region so far, with 125 suicides, followed by August with 111, the VJAS has claimed.
