BJP demands celebration of Constitution Day

Bangalore, Oct 19 (UNI) Bharatiya Janata Party SC Morcha President Ramnath Kovind today demanded that the Union Government celebrate 'Constitution Day' on November 26 every year on the lines of Independence Day and Republic Day.

Talking to newspersons here, he said that though the country was declared as a democratic republic by adopting the Constitution on January 26, 1950, the leaders did not choose to celebrate November 26, 1949, as Constitution Day for some unknown reasons.

''But in our view, November 26 is an equally important national event because on that day in 1949, we the people of India with a solemn resolve adopted, enacted and gave to ourselves the Constitution. Not celebrating November 26 amounts to devaluating the importance of our Constitution as well as the status of our leaders associated with the framing of our Constitution,'' he added.

Mr Kovind said even the Supreme Court and some of the High Courts celebrate November 26 as Constitution day and observe holiday.

To a question, he said the issue would be raised in the Winter Session of Parliament. ''Already the demand was placed before President A P J Abdul Kalam and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the matter is under consideration.'' 'Constitution Day' was celebrated by BJP last year in Delhi and from this year it would be celebrated throughout the country, he added.
