Venezuela, Guatemala vote at UN still at impasse

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 17 (Reuters) US-backed Guatemala maintained its wide lead over Venezuela in voting today morning for an open Latin American seat on the UN Security Council for 2007-2008.

The 11th round of balloting in the 192-member UN General Assembly resulted in 107 votes for Guatemala and 76 for Venezuela, with eight abstentions. Neither country received the necessary two-thirds majority and voting continued for the second consecutive day.
