Treat foeticide as murder: Shabana

Jalandhar, Oct 17 (UNI) Noted film actress Shabana Azami today said the idea of registering murder case against culprits in female foeticides would be mooted at an appropriate forum for serious consideration.

At a function here, Ms Azami, who is also the chairperson of the Punjab State Advisory Committee for Implementation of PNDT Act against practice of female foeticide, said the suggestion made by members at the committee meeting here today deserved serious consideration and a decision in this regard could be taken only at the national level after a proper debate and discussion.

Ms Azami, a former Rajya Sabha MP, also reiterated the need of immediate provision of reservation for women in Parliament, state legislatures and government jobs for creating an atmosphere conducive for women empowerment.

She said simultaneous efforts for women empowerment and social awareness against the evil of female foeticide would help us in getting rid of the prevailing problem.

While speaking at the function, Ms Azami called upon people particularly women and the media to bring zero tolerance situation against female foeticide by extending active cooperation and role at personal level.

State Health and Finance Minister Surinder Singla and other dignitaries also spoke on the occasion.
