AP's income goes up as it revises base year

Hyderabad, Oct 17 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh's income went up by 3.08 per cent during 2004-05 as the state was the 'first' in the country to comply with the Centre's direction to change the base year from 1993-94 to 1999-2000.

Announcing this at a press conference here today, State Economics and Statistics Director Saroja Rama Rao said the GDP, which stood at 2,02,576 crore under the old series during 2004-05 was revised to 2,08,817 crore under the new series.

The per capita income rose by Rs 654 to 23,807 under the new series, she added.

In an effort to improve the terms of coverage, computer-related activities in unorganised sector, toddy, goat milk, duck eggs, salt and capital expenditure incurred on seven new tree crops during gestation period, installation of wind energy systems, private telecommunication, renting of machinery and equipment without operator were included for calculation of state income, she said.

Sectors showing increase in levels of income estimated in the new series included real estate, ownership of dwellings and business services (Rs 2234 crore), livestock(Rs 584 crore), banking and insurance(Rs 418 crore), manufacturing registered(Rs 145 crore), electricity, gas and water supply (Rs 57 crore), construction(Rs 425 crore), trade, hotels and restaurant(Rs 56 crore), railways (Rs 312 crore), transport by other means and storage(Rs 581 crore), she said.

Agriculture(Rs 411 crore), forestry and logging(Rs 192 crore), mining and quarrying(Rs 34 crore), manufacturing unregistered(Rs 801 crore) and communications (Rs 129 crore) were the sectors showing decrease in income under the new series, she said.

The rationale behind the change in base year was to incorporate the latest international standards, capture structural changes in the economy, incorporate results of long term surveys and census and realistically measure real growth in economy, she said.
