Amateur golf championship commences at Chandimandir
Chandigarh, Oct 17 (UNI) The Second Mid-Amateur and the 35th Amaterur Golf Championship got underway at the Shivalik Army Golf Course at Chandimandir today. Lt Gen A N Aul, Chief of staff HQ Western Command inaugurated and declared open the tournament, which is a prestigious national level event being hosted under the aegis of the country's apex golf body, the Indian Golf Union (IGU).
Being played on 'stroke play' basis in conformity with the rules of Royal and Ancient Golf Club, United Kingndom, the tournament would be contested by various players of national repute. Both the events would conclude on the 20th of this month, followed by a prize distribution ceremony on the same day.
On day one in the Mid-Amateur event, the first place was tied with a score of 76 between Hav Jahangir and A N Gopal, at the second place was H S Kang with a score of 77 followed by Balwant Singh at 79 and Gaurav Ghosh at 81.
The Shivalik Golf Course forms at a part of the Shivalik Environmental Park and Training Area (SEPTA) and is considered to be one of the most adventurous courses of the country. A part of the course was recently re-laid under the patronage of Lt Gen Daljeet Singh, GOC-in-C, Western Command and this is the first major championship being held after relaying of the course.
