50 active pressure mines recovered in AP

Vijayawada, Oct 17 (UNI) The three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted by the City Police Commissioner Umesh Sharaff after the seizure of five gunny bags of rocket parts last month, today recovered 50 powerful pressure mines from the premises of Kranthi Transport Company.

Addressing a press conference here tonight, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) M Satyanarayana Rao said the CPI (Maoists) had used the Kranti Transport Company to transfer the spare parts of rocket launchers.

He said the gunny bags containing the mines was booked from Nellore to Vijayawada by one Satyanarayana on May 8 and again it was re-booked from here to Kommarravolu of Prakasam district on May 26 in the name of Rangaswamy.

"As the stock was not claimed by the addressee during the last few months at Kommarravolu, the consignment was sent back to the Kranthi Transport Company head office and reached here on October 15" he said.

The Police Commissioner alerted the SIT team on getting information on the consignment and the team, along with the Mandal Revenue Office (MRO) staff, went to the premises of the transport company this morning and effected the seizure, Mr Rao said.

The mines were filled with explosive substances.

Cases would be filed against Satyanarayana, Rangaswamy and others involved in the operation under Indian Arms Act and Andhra Pradesh Security Act, he added.
