Sudanwa scalps Vinayak Sharma
New Delhi, Oct 16 (UNI) Sitaram Sudanwa of Tamil Nadu pulled off the biggest upset in the junior section when he defeated second seed Kaza Vinayak Sharma of Andhra Pradesh 6-1, 6-1 to enter the under-16 quarterfinals of the DSCL Open National Tennis Championship here today.
On an action-packed day at the DLTA complex, Sitaram played a mixture of percentage tennis and hit outright winners to get past Kaza Vinayak even as top seed Vijayant Malik faced some anxious moments.
Malik, from Chandigarh, faced stiff resistance from Prateek Bhambri in the first set but was on a roll in the second which he won 6-0.
Third seed Parul Verma, also from Chandigarh, defeated Delhi boy Ankit Sachdeva 6-0, 6-2.
One match, which went the full distance, was between Delhi's Yuki Bhambri and Ronak Manuja. Yuki won 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3 in a match where fortune and form swung like a pendulum.
There were no major surprises in the under-14 boys' with second seed Irfan Hussain of Chennai playing a compact game to defeat statemate S Sidharth 6-2, 6-4. Top seed Samip Mehta also had an easy passage into the last eight.
The draw held good in the under-16 girls as well, with the seeds rolling into the last eight stage. Top seed Tanvi Shah, second seed Divija Mandava, third seed T Nilaya and fourth seed Rashmi Teltumbe won without dropping a set.
