Poll violence in city; AIADMK MLA arrested

Chennai, Oct 16: Police have arrested P K Sekar Babu, MLA, and North Chennai District AIADMK secretary from a private nurshing home, where he was being treated for injuries sustained in poll violence during the first phase elections to the Chennai Corporation on Friday.

According to police, the arrest was effected following confession made by 16 persons, who were arrested with five petrol bombs at St Thomas Mount in the city, as part of security measures for the second phase of local bodies polls yesterday.

The arrested told the police that Sekar Babu had hired them to carry out destructive activities during the polling at suburban Nanganallur and nearby areas.

Later, Mr Babu was remanded to judicial custody, police added.

Police have also registered a case against former AIADMK Minister Mrs Valarmathi in this connection, who is said to be absconding.
