Police constables in Maharashtra to be the highest paid

Mumbai, Oct 16 (UNI) Maharashtra Government today decided to effect a Rs 1031 hike in the monthly pay of police constables making them the highest paid in the country.

Announcing this at the weekly cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said the wage structure has been revised from the current Rs 3050-4590 to Rs 3200-4900. Besides, they will get a special allowance of Rs 500.

''The monthly pay will increase by Rs 531 and they will also get an allowance of Rs 500 taking the total wage increase to Rs 1031. The decision will cause an additional burden of Rs 111 crore on the state exchequer annually'', the Chief Minister said.

As many as 75,167 police constables all over the state would benefit due to the decision. Similarly, Police Naiks will get special allowance of Rs 200 along with their present wage structure of Rs 4000-6000 which will benefit 24,065 police naiks.

The police havaldars get a special allowance of Rs 500 as against the present allowance of Rs 200 along with their salaries which is in the bracket of Rs 4000-6000. As many as 34,814 havaldars will benefit due to the decision, Mr Deshmukh said.

Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil who was present on the occasion, said the revised wage structure was the highest in the country. Even in Punjab, the wages for constables were Rs 3120 per month. The revised wage structure will come into effect from October one, he added.
