Nikkei share average rises to 0.77 per cent

Tokyo, Oct 16: The Nikkei share average rose 0.77 per cent on Monday as shares of Kyocera Corp., Honda Motor Co. Ltd. and other leading companies gained on confidence in their earnings prospects.

Shares of Sony Corp. were up 1.5 percent at 4,830 yen as investors shrugged off a report that Toshiba Corp. may seek compensation for lost sales and damage to its reputation after a recall of Sony-made computer batteries.

The Nikkei was at 16,658.51, while the broad TOPIX index was up 0.68 percent at 1,649.10.
