Guwahati met centre to have Doppler Radar

Guwahati, Oct 16 (UNI) Union Minister for Science&Technology Kapil Sibal today said that a Doppler radar will be set in the state capital.

Talking to reporters here today after completing his trip to Arunchal Pradesh and Nagaland, Mr Sibal said his ministry also decided to introduce a number of measures in the Northeast for development of infrastructure and said a Doppler radar would be installed in Guwahati by next year.

He said stress would be given on use of local resources and building local talent to make the region prosperous.

''Otherwise, both money and materials would continue to flow outside depriving development of the region,'' he pointed out.

Stressing on economic integration of the states, he said, Arunachal Pradesh with its area of 84,000 square km could alone make the entire nation rich if its resources were used properly.

Mr Sibal said a programme was chalked out under National Mission on Bamboo Application (NMBA) to use the abundantly available bamboo for different economic activities.

Pointing out the energy generation potential in Arunachal, he said the department has decided to support macro and mini hydel projects below 100 kw in the region to be set up by state science and technology councils. The two states have already started a few such projects, he noted.

He said most of the states were suffering due to over dependence to the Central schemes and warned ''in such a situation, economic growth of the state could suffer.'' Mr Sibal said apart from those measures, after discussions with the state government, he also agreed to adopt four colleges from both states to improve the science department with technical training to educated youth in Kolkata. The states would also be provided gadgets for providing safe drinking water.
