Decision on AFSPA soon:Oscar Fernandes

Imphal, Oct 16 (UNI) Union Minister Oscar Fernandes, accompanied by student leaders and human rights activists, visited Manipuri activist, Irom Sharmila at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi yesterday.

A member of the delegate told UNI over phone from New Delhi that Irom Sharmila, who has been on fast since November 2000 demanding repeal of the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958, had been detained by the Delhi Police. She has demanded discussion of AFSPA during the winter session of Parliament.

Oscar Fernandes speaking to Sharmila said the Centre's top leaders were discussing the issue and a decision may be taken before the session.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi would also be apprised about the matter, Mr Fernandes said.
