Counting for Madurai by-poll tomorrow

Madurai, Oct 16 (UNI) Counting of votes for the Madurai Central Assembly constituency which went to polls on October 11, will be taken up tomorrow.

The bypoll was necessitated following the death of senior DMK leader and Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Minister P T R Palanivel Rajan on May 20.

While the ruling DMK fielded S S Ghouse Basha, the opposition AIADMK nominated its Urban District Secretary and former MP V V Rajan Chellappa.

The DMDK of filmstar-turned politician Vijaykant had put up a green horn, M R Pannerselvam.

The bypoll, held under extraordinary security cover, had recorded 68.9 per cent polling.

The Electronic Voting Machines, used for the poll, were kept under tight security at the counting centre in the city.

With a total electorate of 1.32 lakh, this constituency was the first in the state where Photo Electoral Rolls was used on a pilot basis.
