Cong demands NHRC probe into UP starvagtion deaths
Lucknow, Oct 16 (UNI) The Congress today asked the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to hold a probe into several starvation deaths of farmers in Uttar Pradesh.
In a letter sent to the NHRC, Congress alleged that several farmers have died of hunger in Bundelkhand region and Mirzapur, Sonebhadra, Kushinagar and Maharajganj districts of the state in the past few years.
The memorandum also charged the ruling Samajwadi Party with ignoring the interests of the farmers by handing over the system of seed and urea distributions to mafias close to the ruling dispensation.
Claiming the death of over a 1000 farmers in the past two years, Congress has asked the Commission to order a thorough probe into the cases and take suitable action against the guilty.
The memorandum was signed by state unit chief spokesperson Akhilesh Pratap Singh.
