BJP to agitate against demand for clemency to Afzal

Chennai, Oct 16: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu today announced agitations in protest against demands for clemency to Parliament attack convict, Mohammed Afzal Guru who was awarded capital punishment in the case.

A party delegation, led by state unit President L Ganesan, called on Governor Surjit Singh Barnala at Raj Bhavan and presented a petition that Afzal should not be given clemency.

Earlier, addressing a press conference at the party office, Mr Ganesan said the attack on Parliament was a challenge thrown to the sovereignty of the nation and all sections should condemn it.

Those who had sought clemency for Afzal were only lending support to anti-national activities, Mr Ganesan charged and condemned Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Gulam Nabi Azad for organising agitations in support of the demand.

Stating the BJP was firm that Afzal should be hanged, he said the party would stage demonstrations in Chennai and Madurai tomorrow in support of its demand.

Mr Ganesan charged that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had made a statement against capital punishment only to lure Muslim votes.
