MP gas leak: About 200 people still suffering

Raisen, MP, Oct 15 (UNI) About 200 people are still suffering the after effects of inhaling a toxic gas that leaked last evening from a hitherto unidentified factory in this district's Mandideep area.

After being provided first aid at Bhopal's hospitals, the residents of Maindua, Keerathpur and Nayapura villages are undergoing treatment in their homes. They report suffering a burning sensation in the eyes and vomiting. Doctors have rushed to the affected area from this district headquarters and the Rapid Action Force's local station.

The victims also suffered coughing and headaches yesterday. They complained that proper treatment was not provided to them at the J P Hospital.

Raisen District Collector Arun Bhatt visited the villages to review the treatment and other arrangements.

''An investigation is underway to identify the gas and the precise location of the leak. A magisterial inquiry will be conducted and a report sought in about five days,'' the bureaucrat added.

State Culture Minister Lakshmikant Sharma visited the affected area today and took stock of the situation.

Meanwhile, Bhopal Pollution Control Board scientist Gunwant Joshi collected samples from several factories.
