Local body polls passes off peacefully except minor incidents
Tiruchirapalli, Oct 15 (UNI) The second phase of the local bodies elections passed off peacefully, except for a few stray incidents in Tiruchirapalli district.
The sixty ward Tiruchirapalli city corporation, three town Panchayats and six panchayat unions with a total electorate of about 10.86 lakh, had gone to the polls today As many as 10,790 polling personnel were deployed for the second phase of elections to 1,034 posts with 5,805 candidates in the fray.
Amidst mounting tension at the backdrop of violent incidents in the first phase of civic polls held on October 13 at Chennai, the second phase of elections went off peacufully in the district, with an unprecedented tight security.
Despite of heavy security arrangements, tension prevailed for few minutes at a polling booth in Woraiyur area this noon, when some unidentified miscreants set ablaze a brand new car of the AIADMK candiate R Vanitha, who was contesting in the 57th ward of the city corporation.
However, senior police officials rushed to the spot and defused the tense situation. Similarly, there was a heated duel between a group of scribes representing various newspapers and a Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Rajasekharan, when the latter made some derogatory reemarks against newspersons on the car issue.
Barring few stray incidents, there was no no major untoward incidents in the district, police said.
