Dedicated handloom department mooted
Imphal, Oct 15 (UNI) The Manipur Handloom and Textile Employees Union has demanded the state government to help weavers make their profession economically viable.
Union president Chingtam Luwang here today charged the state government of neglecting the handloom sector at a time when the industry had immense growth prospects.
Luwang said the North East region had an acute electricity crisis and handloom was the only industry that could flourish with an erratic power supply.
''The state's handloom products are of high quality and have good scope for export,'' he said.
However, he claimed that the poor people especially women in the handloom industry knew little about the schemes announced by the government.
The Government's negligence had led to the decline of the handloom industries, Mr Luwang alleged.
He suggested a proactive approach and intervention by the government so that the industry could progress, thus entailing growth and development of the state.
