Basmati variety affected with disease in Haryana

Kurukshetra, Oct 15 (UNI) A high-yielding variety of basmati, Pusa-1121, has been found affected by the 'bakanae' disease in Kurukshetra and Karnal districts.

The variety was relased by the Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, last year claiming that it was disease resistant and gave a yield of 18-20 quintals per acre. Last year it had fetched up to Rs 1,700 per quintal, as against Rs 1,400 for Taraori basmati.

However the yield could be affected this year in some parts where the 'bakanae' disease has been spotted, according to Mr N S Tomar of Kurukshetra Seeds Private Limited. The disease has been brought to the notice of IARI.

According to IARI scientists a plant affected by the disease turns yellowish green, thin and grows abnormally tall and usually fails to seed. It is caused by the fungus Fusarium moniliforme.

However it has come to the notice of agriculture experts that the seeds obtained from the same source and grown in other areas have not developed the 'bakanae' symptoms. Taking this into account it seems environmental and soil conditions play a role.

Agri scientists have asked the farmers not to worry, as seed treatment with fungicides and porphylactic measures at various growth stages prevents the outbreak of the disease or controls it.
