Woman cremates mother breaking custom

Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu Oct 14 (UNI) A woman cremated her Mother, much against the Hindu traditional customs at a cremation ground here today.

Police said Visalakshi, wife of Muniappan, residing at Ayyampettai near here was a retired employee of an Old Age Home in this district. She was bed-ridden for sometime and died yesterday.

Malarvizhi (54) daughter of the deceased, performed the last rites of her mother, much to the surprise of the people here, as normally the religious custom does not permit a female member of the family to complete the formalities.

The local resident and the AIADMK member M Santhanam said the woman's bold action had set a new trend.
