PIPFPD urges Kalam to grant clemency to Guru
New Delhi, Oct 14 (UNI) The Pakistan India People's Forum for Peace Democracy (PIPFPD) today appealed to President A P J Abdul Kalam to grant clemency to death-row convict Mohammad Afzal Guru as it would destabilise the peace process in Jammu and Kashmir. The forum also submitted a memorandum to the President, saying that peace in Jammu and Kashmir will be a casualty if he is hanged.
''Over the past ten years the India-Pakistan talks and the dialogue between the Centre and the separatist groups has steadily improved the situation in the state,'' it said.
''The hanging would undoubtedly be a setback for the peace process and have a negative impact on gradual normalisation in the region,'' it added.
PIPFPD claimed that human rights activists, jurists and a large section of the society believed that the sentence was unjust.
