Musicologist T S Parthasarathy passes away

Chennai, Oct 14: Veteran musicologist T S Parthasarathy, who mastered ancient music, dance scripture and treatises with his knowledge of several Indian languages, died here yesterday following a heart attack.

He was 93. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter, family sources told UNI here today.

Mr Parthasarathy, who served as Secretary of the famed Music Academy for several years, recently recovered from a bout of fever.

He complained of exhaustion and went to sleep around 1000 hrs yesterday. He died at 1100 hrs following a heart attack.

The last rites were performed today.

The office-bearers of Music Academy, including President N Murali, Secretary M S Venkataraman and Treasurer R Ramakrishnan visited the residence of Mr Parthasarathy and paid their last respects.

Known for his works that included translations of kritis and operas of the Trinity and of Tagore's plays from Bengali to Tamil, Parthasarathy was a great devotee of saint composer Thyagaraja, in whose samadhi at Tiruvaiyar in Thanjavur he engraved his Kritis.

His 1967 book on Tyagaraja's compositions in Tamil was a big hit and served as an authoritative guide for music students on the 'sahityam' (lyrics) of the versatile composer.

A recipient of the prestigious Sangeet Natak Academy award, Parthasarathy was a prolific writer on the contributions of Thyagarja, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Syama Shastri.
