Visakhapatnam, Oct 14 (UNI) Union Railways Minister Lalu Prasad today said 24 railway projects in Andhra Pradesh had been sanctioned at a cost of Rs 7,000 crore.

The fast growing port city of Visakhapatnam needed better rail connectivity to the neighbouring states of Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Bihar, he told reporters here.

City MP N Janardhana Reddy and Union Minister of State for Mines T Subbarami Reddy gave representations to Mr Prasad on the long-pending demand of the people of North Andhra for shifting Waltair Division from East Coast Railway to South Central Railway.

Mr Reddy said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had declared in July that Visakhapatnam would be made a 'jewel' on the Coromandel Coast like Chennai and Kolkata. Only the status of an independent zone would help make this possible, he added.

He requested the Railway Minister to provide new trains like Visakhapatnam-Mumbai Garibhi Rath express via Vijayawada and Secunderabad, Visakhapatnam-Hyderabad overnight superfast express, Vishakhapatnam-Shirdi express via Secunderabad, Visakhapatnam-Chennai overnight express with increased frequency, extension of New Delhi-Bhubaneswar Rajdhani express to Visakhapatnam and conversion of Visakhapatnam station into a terminal.

The Railway Minister said he was seriously concerned with the problems of the region and it was his duty to the poor people travelling by trains to provide more facilities.
