Indian delegation leaves for 115th IPU assembly

New Delhi, Oct 14: A nine-member Parliamentary delegation, led by Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, today left for Geneva to attend the three-day 115th Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) assembly beginning on October 16.

According to a Lok Sabha Secretariat release issued here, the assembly would mainly discuss the issues of cooperation between Parliaments and the United Nations in promoting world peace, particularly from the perspectives of the fight against terrorism and energy security.

The session would also discuss the role of Parliaments in overseeing the achievements of the Millennium development Goals, particularly with regard to the problem of debt and the eradication of poverty and corruption.

The assembly, besides taking up a panel discussion on the subject ''Committee on Human Rights of Parliamentarians: thirty years of defending free speech'', may also include any event of international importance.

After the conclusion of the assembly, the IPU will hold a special conference on Parliamentary Broadcasting which is being organised jointly by the Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments (ASGP) and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). This will provide an expert forum for discussion of parliamentary Broadcasting.

Lok Sabha Secretary General P D T Achary and Media Advisor to Lok Sabha Speaker Bhaskar Ghose would be participating in this conference, the release added.
