Congress rejoices over Yunus honour

New Delhi, Oct 14 (UNI) The Congress Party today congratulated economist Mohammed Yunus and the Grameen Bank of Bangladesh on being conferred with the Nobel Peace Prize, 2006, and said their excellence in diverse spheres of human endeavour were extremely close to the party.

Congress spokesman Abishek Manu Singhvi said the party's faith in Mr Yunus and his unique organisation had now been vindicated and redeemed.

"The Congress Party and its president Sonia Gandhi are proud that the Nobel Peace Laureate is also the recipient of the Indira Gandhi Award for Peace, Disarmament and Development from the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust in 1998," he said.

Dr Singhvi said Mr Yunus and the Grameen Bank stood for excellence in diverse spheres of human endeavour, all extremely close to the Congress and the congress President.

"Their work stands at the singular intersection of women empowerment, poverty alleviation, grassroots social work and an operational endorsement of Small is beautiful," Dr Singhvi added.

" Each of these themes reflect deep concern for the common man, for vulnerable constituencies like women and children and for a bottom upward approach to poverty alleviation. We wish Mr Yunus and his organisation greater and grander rulestones in their service to the mankind.," Dr Singhvi said.
