World Standards Day to be celebrated tomorrow

Chandigarh, Oct 13 (UNI) The theme for World Standards Day, to be celebrated tomorrow, is ''Standards : big benefits for small business''.

The World Standards Day is celebrated every year to mark the creation of International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 1946. ISO is an apex body engaged in the work of standardisation and its implementation on global basis and has on its membership National Standards Bodies of different countries.

ISO was founded with the objective of promoting development of standards in the world with a view to facilitate international exchange of goods and services and to develop mutual cooperation in the sphere of intellectual, scientific, technological and economic activities.

Today, ISO works covers virtually all fields of human activity, except electro-technical field handled by the International Electro (Technical Commission (IEC) and Telecommunication field handled by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

The theme this year 'Standards: big benefits for small business', was chosen as it is estimated that more than 95 per cent of the world's businesses are small to medium sized.

International standards developed by ISO, IEC and ITU have facilitated economic development and the dissemination of technologies that empower small business, as much as their larger counterparts.

International standards provide practical solutions to many the challenges faced by small businesses in today's globalising markets.

They allow small business owners and managers to enhance further their traditional virtues of hard work, enterprising spirit and close attention to the requirements and satisfaction of their customers.
