Latest tech enhances success rate in skull surgery

Chandigarh, Oct 13: A three-day Annual Conference of Skull Base Surgery Society of India will begin here today.

It has been organised by the Department of Neurosurgery, PGIMER here.

The success rate in the skull-based surgeries have now been enhanced by the use of new imaging techniques like MRI, microinstrumentation, modern microscopes, image guided surgical techniques and of course treatment by gamma knife, said a well known participnt from Japan Prof O Hata.

President of the society Dr VK Khosla informed that the base of the skull is very intricate area which forms the border between delicate components of the brain and the remaining part of the body and all the important nerves from the brain and important blood vessels to the brain traverse this area and hence any disease involving the base of the skull becomes a challenge for any body to treat.

During the three-day conference there would be a live operative session with the assistance of world's famous neurosurgeons. There would be facility for two days audio visual demonstration. There would be discussions regarding latest techniques to manage the patients with difficult skull base lesions.
