ACTIP opposes move to construct Tipaimukh dam
Imphal, Oct 13 (UNI) The Action Committee Against Tipaimukh Project (ACTIP) today deamnded scrapping of construction of Tipaimukh dam and urged the Manipur government and the Centre to come out with their stand on the proejct.
The ACTIP in a statement said inspite of adverse observations by experts that the project was not viable the governments could not impose their will over the ''indigenous people'', who would suffer most once the project was completed.
''We will not allow Manipur to become another sacrificial lamb on the alter of neo-development policy adopted by the government'', the statement maintained.
The Tipaimukh dam is a mega project being constructed for Rs 6000 crore by the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) to generate about 1500 MW of power. The project would also affect Mizoram. The Bangladesh government has already opposed the construction of the dam as the Barak river where the dam will be constructed flows into Bangladesh.
