NESO renewed demand of repealing AFSPA

Aizawl, Oct 12 (UNI) With the Irom Sharmila's campaign against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act(AFSPA) 1958, the North East Students Organisation (NESO) has also renewed the demand for it's repeal.

Talking to newsmen here the NESO vice-chairperson L Punte said they want a total repeal of the act and have submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister regarding this.

''We condemn the Centre's discriminatory policy in the region by enforcing the act while the same has not been promulgated in any other naxal dominated state,'' Mr Punte said.

Extending support to Sharmila's stand in getting the act repealed from the state, he said NESO would continue the fight against it.

He also opposed the move of laying gas pipe lines from Myanmar to West Bengal through Mizoram as the project would affect the region's environment and economy.

Criticising UPA's 'look east policy' in NE, he said the issues would be discussed at NESO's general meeting next month.
