National Congress on Corrosion Control underway in Mangalore

Mangalore, Oct 12 (UNI) National Corrosion Council of India Founder- Patron Professor K I Vasu today stressed the need for adoption of corrosion control technologies in industries for safety.

Inaugurating the three-day 13th National Congress on Corrosion Control, organised by NCCI in collaboration with Central Electro Chemical Research Institute (CECRI) here, he said loss due to corrosion in the country was estimated to be around Rs 20,000 crore per year, besides ten per cent of the annual metal output going for replacement of corroded materials. Successful application of the available corrosion control knowledge could effect a saving of up to Rs 5,000 crore annually as corrosion of equipment and components reduced productivity and increased the cost of production.

The CECRI former Director said CECRI, founded in 1948, had a large and active multi-disciplinary group of scientists working on various aspects of corrosion control.

New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) Chairman and event Organising Committee Chairman Tamilvanan stressed the need for the concept and knowledge of corrosion control and protection to reach the common man.

CECRI Deputy Director Dr N Palaniswamy said the CECRI had achieved 700 patents, 200 processes, 300 sponsored and grant-in-aid projects and 400 licences. It was also offering a variety of courses to scientists and technical personnel employed in industries, Government and academic institutions.

About 150 scientific papers covering the entire spectrum of corrosion science and engineering would be presented during the congress, besides having talks on topics of great industrial relevance by 12 eminent personalities.
