Japanese Encephalitis toll at 222

Gorakhpur, Oct 12 (UNI) Japanese Encephalitis (JE) continued to claim lives in eastern Uttar Pradesh with the toll mounting to 222 today, following the death of four more children.

Joint Director Health Dr Umakant Prasad said almost 1,300 JE patients had been admitted at the Baba Raghav Das Medical College and other hospitals since April this year.

Close to 100 patients, including 26 fresh cases, are still under treatment at the Medical College and district hospitals.

The JE patients are trickling from Gorakhpur, Maharajganj, Sant Kabirnagar, Deoria, Kushinagar, Basti, Siddharthnagar, Azamgarh, Gonda and Balrampur district of UP.

The government had undertaken a massive vaccination drive against the vector-borne disease. However, the efficacy and penetration of the drive has come under cloud with the mounting toll.
