BSP worker, who attempted self-immolation, dies
Varanasi, Oct 12 (UNI) A Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) worker, who on October 8 allegedly attempted self-immolation, succumbed to burn injuries at a private hospital here today.
Ghoorelal Sonkar (40), who was unable to contest election for the post of corporator from Nagwa ward, slated for October 31, had set himself afire in full public view on the main road in Lanka area on October 8.
He was rushed to Heritage Hospital with 90 per cent burns where he was on ventilator for three days.
Agitated over Ghoorelal's death, locals staged demonstration at the Lanka crossing and raised slogans against the district administration, besides vandalising a four wheeler.
Meanwhile, Additional District Magistrate (City) Indra Vikram Singh said a magisterial probe has been ordered into the entire incident, including the events that led to Ghoorelal's death.
The probe will be conducted by ADM (Civil Supplies). Financial relief of Rs 20,000 has been released to Goorelal's family by the social welfare department.
