SMC to set up Emergency Response System to tackle floods

Surat, Oct 11 (UNI) The Surat Municipal Corporation will set up a centralised Emergency Response System to tackle flash floods in the future.

The centre will be set up at Bhattar, SMC Commissioner Pankaj Joshi informed.

The SMC also plans to acquire more mechanised motor boats. The civic body has only 24 boats at present which was found inadequate in executing relief and rescue operations during the recent floods.

A map is also being readied that will show the areas which are vulnerable to the floods. It will be ready by March 2007, SMC officials said.

A warning system in the catchment areas of Tapi river is also being planned, the SMC officials added.
